First XV Rugby v Rugby School England - Match Report

Final result 9 - 9

On Tuesday 23 rd October Ballyclare High School played host to Rugby School of England. The school famous for being the home of Rugby were on a 2 match tour and had previously beaten Portora Royal 32-14 on the Saturday.

The match kicked off in excellent conditions and in front of a large number of Ballyclare pupils and staff enjoying the change of opposition form the normal fixture list.

Ballyclare started the better of the two teams and seemed to have got themselves mentally in tune for the expected tough test. The forwards through Adam Neill and Ryan Tweed were dominating the lineout and used this as an excellent platform to maul from. From a dominant maul and a strong carry from hooker Matthew Hopper Ballyclare were awarded a penalty which from close range Robert Smith converted for an early 3 nil lead.

Although Rugby were making good use of a slight breeze at their backs and kicking well, Ballyclare were able to maintain possession and surge into Rugby’s half. Paddy Irvine was prominent in the centre cutting nice lines through the middle of the park. Ryan Tweed mad e some telling runs from the back of the scrum and Ballyclare were on top. Robert Smith converted 2 more penalty infringements to points whilst the Rugby kicker landed an excellent long range penalty to leave the score 9-3 moments from half time.

Unfortunately for Ballyclare right on the stroke of half time they gave away a penalty in front of their posts which was easily converted leaving the score 9-6 at the turn.

The second half was completely dominated by Ballyclare but due to poor decision making and handling they were unable to convert pressure into points. The set piece continued to be dominated by the Ballyclare pack but spirited defence from Rugby continued to turn ball over at crucial times.

Late in the game as Ballyclare pressed again into the Rugby 22 but again turned the ball over. Rugby showed excellent counter attack skills to charge 60 meters up field through evasive running and excellent handling. In desperation Ballyclare gave away a penalty in front of their posts which was easily kicked leaving the scores tied 9 all with only a minute to play.

Although the game finished in a draw and tryless it was an extremely intense match which both sides played in great spirit. Ballyclare were extremely disappointed not win a game which they dominated for the majority.

Overall the 3 days hosting Rugby School was a fabulous experience enjoyed by all.
