Report: against R.B.A.I (away)
Ballyclare
High 1 XV stretched their winning streak to 3 games with a hard fought
victory over R.B.A.I.away from home. Ballyclare won the toss and chose
to play into the strong wind in the first half. Ballyclare came out strong
in a fiercely contested first half in which R.B.A.I. failed to capitalise
on their wind advantage rarely getting into the Ballyclare twentytwo.
Ballyclare
missed two penalties in the first half which did not prove to be fatal
for the Clare side. Both sides had opportunities in the first half but
Ballyclare always looked the stronger team with considerable time in the
opponents 22 not converted into points. The score was 0-0 at the interval.
Early in the second half Ballyclare absorbed an early onslaught of R.B.A.I
pressure with long periods of attack without any reward for the Belfast
side. Ballyclare then began to attack themselves until a break away from
the Inst. Hooker only to be stopped right on the line by an excellent
cover tackle from Matthew Holmes. Ballyclare again were camped on their
line for another considerable period. With the ball being held up over
their try line on a number of occasions. Again no points were scored and
Ballyclare cleared. They then began to again control the game with good
kicking from the Ballyclare halfbacks giving the forwards the platform
to attack. Ballyclare set pieces had worked well all day and after a good
line out move Paul Rea found the gap to power over the try line to score
the first points of the game. James Jackson converted to make the score
7-0 with only 5 minutes remaining. Ballyclare received the kick off and
cleared their lines well to drive Inst back into their own twentytwo.
Clare then forced the Belfast side to give away a penalty within kicking
range which Ballyclare made no mistake on capitalising on through James
Jackson. With only a few seconds left on the clock the Score was 10-0
to Ballyclare. The Ballyclare pack all deserve a mention after a solid
performance while Matthew Holmes proved the pick of the backs.
